15.1.2010:  IAPC reports on novel gold catalysts in SCIENCE

Green Chemistry is a topic becoming more and more important in research and industry. New environmentally friendly processes need to be developed. An area being particularly important in this respect is catalysis. At the Institute of Applied and Physical Chemistry, Arne Wittstock and other group members study nanoporous gold (npAu) as a new type of heterogeneous gold catalyst. In this project, it was possible to show that npAu can selectively oxidize methanol to methyl formate leading to no or very small amounts of CO2 being the total oxidation product. The results of this study carried out in collaboration with Cynthia Friend at Harvard University and Juergen Biener at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab are published now in SCIENCE.

14.5.2009:  The smallest catalyst

Angewandte Chemie International Edition reports on very recent results of the AG Swiderek:
“A new strategy to control chemical synthesis by exposure to low-energy electrons relies on the electrostatic attraction caused by the soft ionization of one of the reaction partners. This approach was used to induce a reaction between ethylene and ammonia yielding aminoethane. The reaction resembles a hydroamination except that the electron beam replaces the catalyst used in the organic synthesis.” All details can be found at: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/122385128/abstract

27.4.2009:  ECCL fellow at the IAPC investigates EBID processes

Electron beam induced deposition (EBID) is used to deposit nanoscale structures at surfaces. Although the method applies a focussed high-energy electron beam, backscattered low-energy electrons play an important role in the underlying chemical processes. Unfortunately, these reactions are not sufficiently understood so far. The IAPC now hosts Laurent Bernau from the EMPA in Thun (Switzerland) who, as a fellow of COST action ECCL, will perform experiments aiming at solving this question. We are looking forward to his results.

During the next three months, Prof. Mohammed Nejib Hedhili from Tunis will investigate electron-induced reactions of molecular precursors and thin molecular films which are relevant to the field of electron beam lithography. We are looking forward to this collaboration.

Melanie studied Chemistry in Hannover and will investigate bimetallic catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch catalysis in her PhD project. Since November 2007, Tobias Becker, who studied physics in Osnabrück, is working on his PhD project, which is dedicated to the surface chemistry of gold and gold-silver surfaces. We welcome both in the team!

18.11.2008:  IAPC site of price winning photography

Putting science in the right perspective is an art. This is demonstrated by an exhibition at the Haus der Wissenschaft that opens today by awarding the German Price for Scientific Photography 2008. This is also a special highlight for the IAPC:
The winning photograph has been composed during a night-long session at the IAPC by the light performance artists Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza. An apparatus that is normally used to study electron-induced reactions for surface modification is put in a different context by the light performance and the investigating eye of the scientist. The award winning photograph as well as other contributions to the contest can be seen at the Haus der Wissenschaft until end of December.

14.11.2008:  IAPC collaborates with Institute for Ion Physics in Innsbruck

The application of electron-induced reactions for the controlled modification of surfaces and surface coatings is one of the research foci at the IAPC. The initiating reactions, however, are more easy to study in isolated, i.e. gaseous molecules than in the actual material. Such experiments are now performed as part of a newly established collaboration with the Institute for Ion Physics at the University Innsbruck. As a fellow of the COST network ECCL, IAPC member Thorben Hamann was the first to profit from this collaboration.

Currently, Prof. Cynthia Friend (Harvard University), Humboldt fellow, and her husband Prof. Bob Madix (Harvard University, formerly Stanford University) are fellows at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg and visit the IAPC (AG Bäumer). Prof. Friend will give a presentation about her extensive work on Au catalysis in the Physics Colloqium on the 23rd of October. Furthermore, she will give a lecture on the 27th in the “Ringvorlesung Materialwissenschaften” about the potential of modern surface science for catalysis and material science. Guests are welcome!

16.10.2008:  Special issue of the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry

Electron-induced processes are the topic of a special issue of the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry that has now appeared and was edited by Petra Swiderek (IAPC) together with Tilmann D. Märk (Institute of Ion physics, University of Innsbruck) and Ilya Fabrikant (University of Lincoln, Nebraska). The issue highlights the wide range of phenomena related to the interaction between free electrons and molecules and demonstrates the importance of this research area. All details can be found on the homepage of the journal at http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/13873806 .

26.9.2008:  Successful first IAPC workshop

Catalytic reactions occuring in condensed matter after electron-induced activation and synthesis of catalytically active nanoparticles under exposure to electron beams - these are only two examples demonstrating synergies between the research themes of the IAPC working groups. This was the result of the first IAPC-Workshop that took place September 15-19 on Rieneck castle in the Spessart mountains. The workshop was thus rated as a success by the participants.
